Primary Purpose of the Position The Middle School Humanities Teacher provides engaging, rigorous instruction in reading, writing, and speaking through varied content that includes history, geography, literature, and related fields. They design learning experiences that are grounded in conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and inquiry. The teacher fosters student understanding of diverse cultures, perspectives, and historical contexts, while developing communication and analytical skills. The Middle School Humanities Teacher collaborates with colleagues to design conceptually based units of learning, supports students’ academic and social-emotional growth, and promotes Graded’s mission and values in creating reflective, responsible global citizens. Main Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Student Learning Collaboratively plan and independently deliver high-quality humanities lessons that integrate social studies, literature, and language arts. Foster deep conceptual learning, encouraging students to analyze primary and secondary sources, explore multiple perspectives, and make connections to contemporary issues. Develop students’ skills in reading comprehension, critical analysis, writing, research, debate, and presentation. Empower students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and collaborative learners. Collaboration and Curriculum Development Collaborate with colleagues to design, revise, and implement an aligned middle school humanities curriculum. Develop and contribute to interdisciplinary projects and cross-curricular learning opportunities. Engage in curriculum review, ensuring instruction reflects diverse perspectives and current global issues, as well as research-based best practices for deeper learning. Work closely with Optimal Learning Services (OLS) and English Language Learner (ELL) teams to support student learning (this might include have a teacher or teaching assistant pushing into the classroom to provide support). Certifications and Education Required Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, English, Humanities, or a related field. Valid teaching certification/license. Desired Master’s degree in Education, Humanities, or related discipline. Training or certification in conceptual, inquiry-based, or international curricula (e.g., IB MYP, AP). Experience Required Minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience. Experience teaching middle school students in humanities-related subjects. Familiarity with advisory or homeroom programs supporting adolescent development. Desired Experience in international or multicultural school settings. Experience designing and teaching conceptual units of learning. Experience implementing and supporting Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for students. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Strong ability to teach reading, writing, and research skills within a humanities framework. Broad knowledge of history, literature, geography, and cultural studies. Demonstrated history of effective classroom management and differentiation strategies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, students, and parents. Desired Familiarity with American curricula and/or international curricula (IB MYP or similar). Ability to integrate technology, media, and digital literacy into instruction. Knowledge of strategies to support multilingual and learning diverse learners.
